Domaine Saint Hilaire is a private wine estate in the countryside near Montagnac. The main house is surrounded by mature gardens, a pool terrace, woodland and vineyards. It feels like a house where everyone can settle in, rather than a venue that moves guests through a fixed sequence of rooms.

That variety gives each part of a wedding its own atmosphere. Preparations can take place inside the house, ceremonies may be held beneath the trees or in front of the ivy-covered façade, and the gardens and pool terrace bring everyone together afterwards. The woodland paths, oleander and surrounding vines give us portrait options without needing to leave the estate.

I know the venue from real celebrations, not a styled shoot or a brief visit. I have photographed different ceremonies, different weather and very different groups of people here. That experience helps me anticipate how the light and movement of the day will affect the photographs while leaving room for the wedding to feel like your own.

How a Domaine Saint Hilaire wedding flows

One of the strengths of Saint Hilaire is the way the day can move between distinct spaces while remaining within the estate. There is no need for the wedding to feel like a series of separate photo opportunities. I can follow the natural movement from preparations to ceremony, drinks and dinner while keeping the relationships between people at the centre of the story.

After the ceremony, I normally allow time for everyone to greet you before organising family photographs. Guests can find a drink and relax, and the important hugs and reactions are not interrupted. Group photographs are then handled efficiently in a place with flattering light, so you can return to the reception quickly.

While the house, gardens and vineyards give the photographs context, I do not spend the day making empty pictures of the venue. I am watching for the friend laughing before the punchline, a parent becoming emotional, children finding their own entertainment and the conversations happening around the edges of the obvious moments.

Documentary moments and classical portraits

Most of the wedding is photographed quietly as it unfolds. I do not ask people to repeat reactions, stage false moments or continually perform for the camera. I stay alert, move where I need to be and step in only when direction will genuinely improve the photograph.

Portraits receive a more considered approach. I will help you find flattering light, give simple direction and pay attention to posture, hands and clothing. At Domaine Saint Hilaire, the best location depends on the season, the time and the light. We might use the woodland, a path beside the house, the oleander or the vineyard, but I will not force the same photograph onto every couple.

I usually work with the couple for five to fifteen minutes at a time. If the light becomes particularly good later, I may suggest another brief set of photographs. You receive polished portraits that make proper use of the estate without missing the drinks reception or disappearing from your guests for an hour.

Planning the photographs around the light

The South of France is known for beautiful light, but a summer afternoon can be bright and hot. The woodland gives shade, although light filtering through leaves can change quickly. The front of the house has a very different quality, and the pool terrace can be much brighter. Knowing these spaces means I can advise on the ceremony position, family photographs and portraits without asking you to rebuild the whole timetable around photography.

Before the wedding, I will look at the schedule, where each of you is getting ready and how the ceremony and reception are arranged. If a small adjustment would make people more comfortable or improve the light, I will explain it clearly. On the day, I adapt to what is actually happening. Cloud, wind or a late-running ceremony do not require panic or a rigid list of photographs.
