I’m happy to have the pleasure of featuring a good friend of mine on the blog this week, the amazing portrait photographer Maria Murray. I caught up with Maria and asked her all about being one of the top portrait photographers in the country!

How long have you been a portrait photographer?

I have been interested in photography all of my life but took it up professionally almost 7 years ago, after my daughter Isabelle was born.

How did you get into photography?

I studied photography at college, but only at GCSE level. I had a successful career in financial services in the City, but photography was always a hobby. When my daughter was born I had her photographed at a high street photography outlet and was sorely disappointed with the results. At that time I was also looking for a change of career as I wanted to spend more time with Izzy. That’s how it all begun.

What’s changed in the industry since you first started?

The industry has grown massively even over the past 7 years. Obviously with the digital age being well and truly upon us, lots of people think they can become a photographer. I suppose most people can use a camera to take good shots, but I think it takes a lot of patience & a good instinct to capture those moments that make an ordinary picture amazing.

Describe your favourite type of shoot.

Without a doubt my favourite are the newborns. If I can photograph a tiny baby within the first week of life that’s really special for me. I know I will be delivering timeless images, which show a new little person with everything ahead of them, and the images will be wonderful keepsake for the parents. Babes retain that newborn look for such a short time. That is why it is best to have the newborn session between day 1 and day 10, ideally when the baby is 4-7 days old.

What is the youngest newborn you have photographed?

I have had a clients stop at my studio en route from the hospital – before even gong home first! So I guess 1 day! Or would that be 0 days?

What’s the best bit about your job?

The bit I enjoy the most is the actual shoots, when I am working with my subjects. But nothing is better than the lovely feeling I get when the parents tell me how much the images moved them, and how special they are to them.

What is the worst bit about your job?

The long hours are the worst for me. The amount of work that goes into running a successful studio has to be seen to be believed. Often I will work a 12 hour day, well into the small hours.

How do you get the inspiration to make each photo shoot unique?

My subjects always inspire me. When I photograph my subjects I feel like I come to life with energy and enthusiasm. I treat everyone as individuals -all of my clients have different needs and requirements as well as very different personalities. Every baby, every family is unique. I just try to do that justice.

Do you only shoot babies?

No , not at all. I specialise in newborns, babies and children under 5. But occasionally I might take on a big family shoot and teenagers too. I adore outdoor sessions and with the bluebell season looming I ma really looking forward to photographing all the girlies amongst them! It makes a nice change to the studio and providing it’s not cold ( don’t like the cold much!) I really do enjoy shooting outside.

Lastly, can we see some of your favourite pictures?

Here you go!
