I’ve been really looking forward to working at Cooling Castle Barn in Kent, it’s first local wedding I’ve done for a long while. It’s only about 25 minutes from me and it seems amazing that in 12 years, I’ve never shot there. It’s a great venue, really pretty. I loved the barn with its rustic interior and oak-beamed roof.
It’s not often I have any kind of drama at my weddings – something which I’m grateful of but this week, things got a little worrying. Lucy contacted me a few days before the wedding to tell me she’d broken her foot! Poor Lucy had fallen down the stairs at home on the Monday before the big day and now had her foot in plaster. For any bride-to-be this would have been a nightmare but Lucy decided to just get on with it. It’s a testament to her that even though she must have been in lots of pain on the day, it never showed on her face.
It was more challenging for me, as a photographer. I wanted to get the right balance between including it in the story and giving Lucy and Colm some beautiful pictures that would be with them the rest of their lives. I was also conscious that Lucy couldn’t walk around to different locations or stand for very long. The group shots and some of the couples pictures were taken seated, they worked really well.
The couple had their wedding ceremony outside in the grounds of Cooling Castle Barn. It was the hottest day of the year so far and it was great that the guests could sit outside. Lucy and Colm were so relaxed, so happy and so easy to photograph.
Here are some of those favourites!

Lucy’s sister Emma did her flowers and they were simply beautiful. I love the mix of colours and peonies are my favourite wedding flowers – so soft and feminine.

Lucy waits to make her entrance.

As Lucy walked down the aisle, all the guest applauded. I was so glad I caught it, as an over enthusiastic member of the bridal party decided to try and get the shot and stood in front of me a couple of seconds before I caught this moment – phew!

Lucy’s make artist was the amazing Kirsty McCall her dress was called “Tiffany” and from Augusta Jones.

Inside the barn looked fantastic; the flowers here were by Floral Explosion. The fairy lights on the beams also made for a pretty effect.

Guests could help themselves to the candy shop at the back of the barn (I grabbed a couple of white mice on the way to the car – delicious!)

I had a lot of fun photographing the children playing hide and seek.

The cake was made by Lucy’s friend Deanna. It looked great.

I think this is my favourite of the day. Such a beautiful moment.
Congratulations Lucy & Colm
